A photo rarely dances alone *

The series 'A Photo Rarely Dances Alone' – created as part of various ImpulsTanz workshops – moves away from the traditional depiction of precisely captured moments at the end of a movement. Instead, it seeks to capture the often chaotic and ever-changing nature of dance. It reveals the uncontrollable, the ambiguous and the complexity of expression and movement. Here, dance is not depicted as a fixed choreography, but rather its shimmering interstices and fleeting transitions – the sense of dance as something fluid, never quite tangible. Capturing the sometimes raw energy of dance in an aesthetic photographic form, and the constant struggle with the incompleteness of depicting movement, characterise this visual dialogue, in which the camera itself sometimes became a dancer.

The deliberate blurring and abstraction of the images are no accident; they are a conscious stylistic device and, like the chosen colours, the main protagonists of this work. In contrast to these are images of dancers at rest.

However, "A Photo Rarely Dances Alone" also seeks to translate the collective experiences of the participants and the emotional potential of the "Impulstanz workshops" into images. These workshops are not solely about learning dance techniques, but also – or perhaps first and foremost – about self-expression, improvisation and transformation.
